Miley Cyrus made an appearance performing a slightly different version of her new song Malibu. The Nashville-native was recently quoted saying “fans don’t really take me seriously as a country artist.”
But she’s standing her ground and stripping down her stage persona to get back to the basics… and a less-sexualized image that reflects her Nashville roots.
“I’ve got a tattoo of Johnny Cash’s autograph that he gave me when I was a little girl that says, ‘I’m in your corner,’” Miley said.
“Dolly Parton is my godmother. The fact that country music fans are scared of me, that hurts me.”
She came to the Billboard awards with a goal in mind to subtly win back her country fans. Billy Ray and Noah Cyrus who welcomed Miley to the stage declared, “For the first time in years with pants on, my sister, Miley Cyrus!”
Miley sported a wide southern-style floppy hat and a white off the shoulder top with white cutoff shorts. Pretty demure for the once twerking performer!
She very sweetly broke down crying at the end of her performance, clearly feeling the love in her song written about her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. Critics note that Cyrus’ lighter vibe is likely related to these changes in her personal life.
Is it country? Not quite… but her toned-down persona and twangy rendition of the pop single seems like she’s inching her way towards the country crowd slowly but surely.
